read & download God Rest Ye Merry: Why Christmas is the Foundation for Everything Douglas Wilson ß 8 download God Rest Ye Merry: Why Christmas is the Foundation for Everything summary · 108 Tenment Assumptions Detector test as a guide to understanding Christmas symbolism and muchThe last section contains a read aloud meditation and prayer for each day of Advent making God Rest Ye Merry an excellent tool for cultivating a deep family love of Christmas. God Rest Ye Merry is a series of reflections by pastor Doug Wilson on the meaning and significance of Christmas The book is broken into 5 sections 1 To Gain His Everlasting Hall exegetical explorations of the relevant Biblical passages 2 The Politics of Christmas a very short section trying to establish the implications Christmas has beyond personal piety 3 Celebrating Christmas Like a Puritan historical analysis on the celebration of Christmas and a brief defense of keeping the feast 4 How Shall We Then Shop theological argument against Scroogeism and in defense of gifts joy and celebration and finally 5 Daily Meditations for AdventThis book was okay Sections 1 and 2 were fairly standard reformed evangelical exegesis of the relevant Christmas passages with a little Wilsonian snark thrown in here and there Parts 3 and 4 were novel and contribute something to the contemporary literature on Christmas Part 5 is probably the most valuable section with little devotions for each day leading up to Christmas I imagine this is the only section I will revisit in the futureThe book is a fairly easy read It s repetitive at points which is a little odd for a book under 150 pages I suspect the book s genesis to have come from Wilson s extensive blogging which may account for some of the repetition Still the work could have been improved with a better editor Sections 3 and 4 could have been expanded with some direct engagement with the writers and movements he is critiuing Worth a read but I doubt it will knock your socks off

read & download God Rest Ye Merry: Why Christmas is the Foundation for Everything Douglas Wilson ß 8 download God Rest Ye Merry: Why Christmas is the Foundation for Everything summary · 108 The repetition of Christmas traditions can appear to dull the powerful nature of the holiday God Rest Ye Merry is meant to rekindle the Christian's understanding of Advent on every front from politics to shopping to uproarious celebration Pastor Douglas Wilson cri. Douglas Wilson is a conservative Reformed theologian as well as pastor at Christ Church in Moscow Idaho He wrote in the Preface to this 2012 book This small book is broken up into five lessons or sections The first deals with the foundational doctrines that are connected to the Christmas story The second section addresses the inherently political nature of the Christmas story a fact that Herod understood better than we freuently do The third lesson brings up some historical considerations is it possible to really celebrate Christmas in a robust fashion and yet honor our Puritan heritage The fourth section concerns the much lamented materialism of Christmas And last the final section is a series of daily meditations for the Advent season suitable for use as family readings during the Advent season Pg 9He says The one who spoke the galaxies into existence at the beginning of all things took on human flesh and consented to have his diapers changed But He did not do this in order to demonstrate how low He could stoop Rather He ordained that stooping this low would be the means by which He overcame the world And He ordained that stooping in this way would be the means by which His disciples followed Him into the kingdom Pg 19He notes The Bible teaches us a great deal about our Lord s mother and about her great and astonishing faith But unfortunately Roman Catholic errors idolatries and excesses have created or contributed to a great overreaction from Protestants and hence a great loss for us Often we do not even want to talk about Mary at all still less with the great honor she deserves for fear of being thought of as drifting toward the folly of assuming she is somehow co redemptrix or co mediatrix with her Son Pg 24He observes There is no such thing as a vacuum holiday a celebration without a point Attempts to neutralize Christmas are simply an intermediate step and the alternative meanings are waiting in the wings What does it mean to say that alternative or competitive meanings for Christmas are positioning themselves Usually someone says something like We have to get away from this problem or that one and get back to the TRUE meaning of Christmas What are some of these false solutions SENTIMENTALISM a sentimental Christmas is a Christmas without conflict We cannot rid the world of conflict without conflict But it must be the God ordained kind of conflict MORALISM a Christmas without sin SPIRITUALISM a Christmas without matter Idolatry is a problem but THAT can occur with thoughts and virtual reality as easily as with fudge and presents Pg 31 33Of the Star of Bethlehem he suggests This kind of miracle is hard on modernists trying to be Christian because it is a miracle that depends on the universe being a very different kind of place than their modernist descriptions of it But giving offense to modernist cosmologies is not a sufficient criterion for establishing the presence of poetry or dramatic symbolism Apart from the triune God of Scripture we cannot know anything If we believe in Him we can know the world around us He might tell us about the time He sent one of His celestial glories down into our sky over Bethlehem And the miracle in the sky was NOTHING in comparison to the miracle in Mary s arms in the house below Pg 39 41He comments Jesus taught us that the children of this age are often shrewd than the children of light are They are often aware of the ramification of what we say we believe than we are When Herod heard of a king of the Jews and of a star in the east and of the wise men s intent to worship Him he was troubled by this The birth of Jesus was a threat to him and to his kind of ruler and he knew it very well the life of Jesus presented a potent threat to the status uo This threat was not the result of Herod s paranoia Herod knew what many Christians do not The birth of this child meant that the old way of ruling mankind was doomed Of the increase of the Lord s government there would be no end Pg 64 65He states There is now true union between the heavenly reality and earthly reality and by knowing Him we can know them both But it needs to be emphasized that the Incarnation marked by Christmas is also the final and utter refutation of Kant and all the philosophers indebted to him downstream The Incarnation answers Kant the same way it answers Plato the Word became FLESH It is also beyond ironic that Kant s name was Immanuel Kant and Immanuel means God with us the very possibility Kant was most concerned to deny Pg 69He argues What the Constitution actually mandates with regard to religion is two fold one the non establishment of a national church by an act of Congress and two non interference with the free exercise of religion by Congress Got that No Church of the United States comparable to the Church of England When the Constitution was ratified nine of the thirteen colonies had established state churches at the state level The Constitution prohibits establishing a national denomination and supporting it with tax money It does not reuire every branch of civil government to ignore the nature and will of the triune God Still less does it reuire them to pretend that Jesus Christ did not actually come to establish a new humanity in His own person and work Pg 71 72He acknowledges Much has been made of the Puritan opposition to Christmas but than a little bit of the problem was caused by HOW Christmas used to be celebrated The problem was actually comparable to us objecting to the drunkenness and fornication at Mardi Gras Puritans were opposed to it because of all the immorality that was going on in the name of Jesus But men do not have the right to bind the conscience of another in areas not addressed by the Word of God If someone s conscience does not permit them to celebrate any day like Christmas we should be sensitive to that binding them making them observe the day or pressuring them to do so is not permissible Pg 77 78He suggests The birth of the Lord began to be commemorated somewhere in the third or fourth centuries AD It is commonly argued that this was a takeover of a pagan holiday celebrating the winter solstice But it is just as likely that this was actually the other way around Sol Invictus was established as a holiday by Aurelian in AD 274 when the Christians were already a major force So who was copying whom Some may object to the fact that the suffix mass is still in the name But the objectionable doctrine of transubstantiation was not codified by the Roman church until 1215 at the Fourth Lateran Council The word mass originally came from the fact that in the ancient church catechumens were dismissed from the service before the Lord s Supper was observed Ite missa est which roughly translated meant that you may go now We see it still in our word dismissed The vestigial reference to the Mass in the name should not be a trouble Pg 92 93He proposes It is not the case that our fathers tried to sanitize some pagan celebration of the winter solstice As it turns out the Romans did not celebrate the solstice and their Saturnalia was on a different day entirely one brief abortive attempt by a pagan emperor to START celebrating the solstice was almost certainly a response to the Christian celebration of this day This day is OURS so unbelievers may be cordially invited to keep their hands off it At the same time unbelievers are invited to join us first as interested observers then as catechumens and then as baptized Christians How do we invite them By wishing they would have a merry Christmas No Seasons Greetings for us Pg 121This is an excellent book that will be must reading for Christians studying the historical and theological uestions about Christmas
