Really great book What I love about the Perspectives series is that instead of having one author promoting their own views and the reader wondering whether they are reading truth or propaganda instead the reader is presented with four different views The reader is then left to make up their own minds It is such a great and intellectually honest format The publishers editors and writers all deserve to be commended for their participationWhat most of these Perspective series demonstrate is that most issues of theology are not simple but complicated Otherwise everyone would of course agree That should suggest we Christians should approach those who disagree with us with a little humility and respect Often those who disagree with us have good reason for believing what they believe even if we think they are wrongRe this series on the Sabbath the main thing I got out of it is how much the Seventh day Adventist position presented by Skip MacCarty and the traditional Reformed Presbyterian position presented by Jospeh A Pipa are in agreement They both affirm the ongoing relevance of the Sabbath commandment the fourth command of the Ten Commandment Their disagreement essentially comes down to a single word keeping a Sabbath or keeping the SabbathIn other words they agree 90% In fact it may be like 95% Both Adventists and Reformed agree that the moral aspects of the Sabbath still apply for Christians but only the Jewish ceremonial rites associated with it have been abolished They only disagree as to what those Jewish rites are Reformed say it is the Friday Saturday day itself Adventists instead argue it is the Jewish sacrificial rites most often associated with 2nd Temple Judaism that obviously no longer apply ie Christians no longer sacrifice animals at a Temple for the remission of sin and no longer uphold sacrificial and other rituals mandated by the OT connected with the SabbathThis is all ironic because Adventists are often viewed by other Christians as weird and non Christian outsiders To double that irony it has traditionally been the Reformed camp of Christendom that has cause Adventism a cult But that might be a little like the pot calling the kettle blackInstead it is Lutherans who seem most at odd with the other positions They approach the Law from a completely opposite paradigm Whereas Adventists and Reformed Presbytereans say the OT commands including the Ten Commandments apply unless there is a NT command cancelling that belief and practice Lutherans say all OT commands are cancelled unless explicitly reaffirmed in the NT However that approach seems inane given the NT hardly deals with a range of matters from cursing the deaf to beastialityThe other main criticism of this book is it doesn t deal with other major developments in the theology of this area including recent research re the Noachide Alien understanding of the Law as applied by the Apostles in Acts 15 see recent research by Richard Bauckham and G za Vermes and new perspectives on Paul see N T Wright
