This is a challenging yet beautiful text It reflects on the Genesis creation story bringing out both broad brush themes and subtle details The author uses the resultant picture to encourage each of us to think about the way we treat the planet and each other If anyone has any doubt whether we are all called to put the care of God s creation as a central part of our work witness and worship they will find the answer here

review ✓ eBook or Kindle ePUB Ó Ruth Valerio review Saying Yes to Life: Originally Published as The Archbishop of Canterbury's Lent Book 2020 103 Ruth Valerio Ó 3 review In making a difference for good Ruth Valerio imaginatively draws on the Days of Creation Genesis 1 22 in relating themes of light water land the seasons other creatures humankind Sabbath rest and resurrection hope to matters of environmental ethical and social concern Foun. Ruth Valerio is well known as an environmental campaigner so it is no surprise that the holiness of the created order permeates this book She has done her homework both theological and scientific and this book is both inspirational and highly informative What I had not expected however is a recurring theme the degree to which churches around the world are active in the struggle against environmental destruction and habitat loss Again and again Ruth provides illustrations often drawn from her work with Tearfund of local Christian led initiatives which are protecting and restoring and sustaining the planet we all share I found this book profoundly hopeful Christians make up about a third of the earth s population If we could mobilise act together this lovely world God has given us can yet be restored

The book uses the structure of the account of creation in Genesis chapter one to look at our relationship to the physical work other people and God Chapters tend to deal with theological aspects first and then tackle contemporary issues with the help of a lot of material from other communities and cultures round the world These accounts draw on Ruth Valerio s extensive experience including her work with Tear FundIn our church we have adopted the book for our Lent course and produced our own guidelines and uestions to supplement those at the end of every chapter if you decide to use it as a basis for group discussions it will need a lot of preparation
